The Seattle Public Library is kicking off 2024 with events featuring award-winning cookbook author J. Kenji López-Alt, acclaimed speculative writer Nisi Shawl and more.

The Library offers a range of other free events and workshops in January, including story times, Homework Help, one-on-one business help and special and civic and community programs.

AUTHOR AND COMMUNITY EVENTS

Ladies Musical Club Concert. From noon to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 10. Central Library, Level 1 - Microsoft Auditorium. Join us for a Ladies Musical Club concert featuring trios and duets by Bach, Brahms and other composers. Registration is not required.

J. Kenji López-Alt discusses “The Wok: Recipes and Techniques.” From 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 17. Central Library, Level 1 - Microsoft Auditorium. Join us for a celebration in honor of López-Alt, the winner of the 2023 Washington State Book Award in General Nonfiction for “The Wok: Recipes and Techniques.” The event is supported by the Connie and Gary Kunis Foundation and The Seattle Public Library Foundation and presented in partnership with the Washington Center for the Book. Registration is required.

Seattle Times Pictures of the Year. From 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 25. Award-winning photojournalists and staff from The Seattle Times will tell the story of the year illustrated through their remarkable pictures, followed by a moderated question-and-answer session. This event is supported by The Seattle Public Library Foundation. Registration is not required. 

Acclaimed speculative fiction author Nisi Shawl discusses “Kinning.” From 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 26. Central Library, Level 1 - Microsoft Auditorium. “Kinning” is the sequel to Shawl’s acclaimed debut novel “Everfair,” which continues the stunning alternate history where barkcloth airships soar through the sky, varied peoples build a new society together, and colonies claim their freedom from imperialist tyrants. The event is supported by the Connie and Gary Kunis Foundation and The Seattle Public Library Foundation and presented in partnership with Sistah Scifi. Registration is required. 

WRITING EVENTS AND BOOK CLUBS

Low Vision Book Group. From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 9. Central Library, Level 4 - Room 6. Join our Low Vision Book Group at the Central Library for a discussion of "The Sentence is Death" by Anthony Horowitz. Registration is not required.

It’s About Time Reading Series with Civic Poet Shin Yu Pai. From 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 11. Online. This event will feature Seattle Civic Poet Shin Yu Pai, along with Ricardo Ruiz and Ebo Barton, with three-minute open mic opportunities between featured readers. This event is presented in partnership with Seattle Office of Arts & Culture. Registration is required.

Virtual Writers Read. From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 14. Online. Join us for a monthly reading series with the African American Writers’ Alliance featuring an open mic and selected author readings from local writers. Registration is required.

El Club Latino. From 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 14. Central Library, Level 8 - Meeting Room. Únase al Club de Lectura de la Biblioteca Central. El libro de este mes es: "Marrón" de Rocío Quillahuaman. No se requiere inscripción. Join the Central Library Book Club. This month's book is "Marrón" by Rocío Quillahuaman. Registration is not required. This event is in Spanish.
