July 2023 Author Readings And Community Events With The Seattle Public Library

Join The Seattle Public Library in July for StoryWalks® featuring books by Indigenous authors around Magnolia; a night of spoken word, dance and choir with Path With Art; and readings from award-winning authors including Karen Lord, Silvia Moreno-García and Tobi Ogundiran.
Events requiring registration are noted below; all Library events are free and open to the public. Find information and registration through the event links below or at spl.org/Calendar.
The Library offers a range of other free events and workshops in July, including story times, and business workshops and consults.
AUTHOR OR COMMUNITY EVENTS
- Magnolia StoryWalks®: From July 8 to Aug. 31, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Follow a StoryWalk® Trail this summer at Daybreak Star Indian Cultural Center, Magnolia Community Center, Magnolia Farmers' Market, the Magnolia Branch and the playground near the Discovery Park Visitor Center. Enjoy five books written by Indigenous authors as you stroll through these wonderful parks and other sites in Magnolia.
- Voices of Belonging: An Evening of Celebration with Path With Art Artists. 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday, July 14. Central Library, Level 1 – Auditorium. “Voices of Belonging” will feature a lively variety of performances from Path With Art artists, including spoken word poetry, dance, choir and band music, and even some DJ-ing! All of these forms of expression will be connected by the guiding theme of belonging and will celebrate the power of art to heal, uplift, and bring people together. Path With Art is an event partner. Registration is required.
- Clarion West Presents Karen Lord. 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 18. Join us for an online reading and discussion with Karen Lord as a part of Clarion West’s Summer of Science Fiction & Fantasy reading series. Lord is a Barbadian author, editor and research consultant whose debut novel, "Redemption in Indigo" was nominated for the 2011 World Fantasy Award for Best Novel. Clarion West Writers Workshop is an event partner, and the event is supported by The Seattle Public Library Foundation and the Gary and Connie Kunis Foundation. Registration is required.
- Silvia Moreno-Garcia Discusses "Silver Nitrate" / Silvia Moreno-Garcia habla sobre su libro "Silver Nitrate.” 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 18. Central Library, Level 1 – Auditorium. Join us to hear bestselling author Moreno-Garcia (“Mexican Gothic”) discuss her latest book, a dark thriller about the curse that haunts a legendary lost film – and awakens one woman's hidden powers. This event will be presented in English and Spanish, and event partners are University Book Store and the Mexican Consulate. This event is supported by The Seattle Public Library Foundation and Gary and Connie Kunis Foundation. Registration is required.
- Tobi Ogundiran Presents “Jackal, Jackal” in Conversation with Nisi Shawl. From 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Wednesday, July 26. Central Library, Level 1 - Auditorium.
Shirley Jackson award-nominated author Tobi Ogundiran reads from "Jackal, Jackal: Tales of the Dark and Fantastic,” a highly anticipated debut collection of stories full of magic and wonder and breathtaking imagination. Tobi will also discuss the book with author Nisi Shawl. Third Place Books is an event partner and the event is supported by The Seattle Public Library Foundation and the Gary and Connie Kunis Foundation. Registration is required.
WRITING EVENTS AND BOOK CLUBS
- Virtual Writers Read. From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, July 9. Online. Join us for a monthly reading series featuring an open mic and selected author readings from local writers. Registration is required.
- Low Vision Book Group @ Central Library. From 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 11. Central Library, Level 4 - Room 6. Join our Low Vision Book Group for a discussion of the book "Daisy Jones and the Six" by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Registration is not required.
- Write with Hugo House: Seattle Writes @ Fremont Branch. From 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, July 11. Fremont Branch. A drop-in writing circle for adults of all experience levels. All genres of writing welcome. Registration is not required.
- Virtual It's About Time Writers' Reading Series. From 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Thursday, July 13. Online. The Ballard Branch welcomes the 404th meeting of the It's About Time Writers' Reading Series with with Peter Mountford, and readings by Sharon M. Carter, Steve Sibra & Susan Gardner. Registration is required.
