The Seattle Public Library Announces Summer Hours

The Seattle Public Library will introduce a new summer hours schedule at several locations across the city beginning Thursday, June 20. This new schedule will distribute hours differently across various locations to meet community needs throughout the summer months. It does not reduce or significantly increase the Library’s total hours of operation systemwide, compared to our current schedule.
With this new schedule, patrons can expect:
- Increased hours at larger locations equipped with air conditioning to reliably serve as cooling centers during hot weather. According to forecasts, Seattle is expected to have a hotter and dryer summer than usual.
- Increased open hours at heavily utilized branches in neighborhoods where access to in-building resources such as computers, restrooms and other in-building amenities are in high demand.
- Increased number of seven-day-a-week service locations. Beginning Thursday, June 20, these locations will include the Central Library and the Ballard, Beacon Hill, Capitol Hill, Douglass-Truth, Greenwood, High Point, South Park and Rainier Beach branches.
The Library’s current schedule at all locations will remain in effect through Tuesday, June 18. The Library will be closed on Wednesday, June 19, in observance of the Juneteenth holiday.

Air-conditioned Library locations
Of the Library’s 27 locations, 21 currently offer air-conditioned public spaces, two more than last summer:
The Library recently installed air conditioning at the Northeast and Southwest branches thanks to funding provided by Seattle City Council, The Seattle Public Library Foundation and the 2019 Library Levy.
When the Green Lake Branch opens later this year, the Library will have 22 air-conditioned public spaces. You can find a complete list of air conditioned libraries at www.spl.org/Shelter.
Four of the Library’s historic Carnegie-era branches – Fremont, Queen Anne, University and West Seattle – do not yet have air conditioning, while the historic Columbia Branch is equipped with a heat pump. The Library is actively pursuing federal funding to modernize the HVAC systems of all five of these Carnegie branches so that air conditioning can be offered at these locations as well.
Library locations without air conditioning must close when indoor temperatures reach 85 degrees or higher due to state-mandated workplace rules.
