release date: September 12, 2024
Do you know a child or teen who can use academic support this year? Starting the week of Sept. 16, The Seattle Public Library’s free afterschool K-12 tutoring program, Homework Help (spl.org/HomeworkHelp), will be available at nine branches: the Broadview, Columbia, Douglass-Truth, High Point, Lake City, NewHolly, Northgate, Rainier Beach and South Park branches.
Because Homework Help is a drop-in program, students can show up any day to receive help, and they do not need to have a Library card to attend. Snacks are provided at every Homework Help session, courtesy of The Seattle Public Library Foundation and the Hunger Intervention Program.
Trained volunteer tutors work with students individually and in small groups on any subject. Students without homework can read and play learning enrichment games with tutors. High school students can get help with not just academic subjects but with other priorities, such as college essays.
In surveys, 70% of Homework Help students report having a better understanding of their homework assignments because of Homework Help, and 60% report better grades. Comments from participants also highlight the benefits of Homework Help. As one mother said, “Homework Help provides my two sons a great space to learn and be curious.”
Homework Help is not offered on days when Seattle Public Schools are not in session.
