The library is a space where everyone is welcome. We have sensory kits at every location to help patrons with neurodivergent needs feel comfortable and supported while visiting our locations. The Northeast Branch also has an interactive sensory wall for children to explore and play.
Sensory kits are available at all 26 library branches and the Central Library’s Children’s Center for in-library use only. These kits were created to make the library more welcoming and accessible to all patrons. Sensory kits are for everyone, regardless of age or medical diagnosis.
We recognize that the bright lights, noise, and busyness of library spaces can sometimes be overwhelming or uncomfortable, especially for younger visitors. Our kits have a variety of tools to help patrons experiencing overstimulation stay at the library and feel better supported.
Ask staff for a kit during your visit. Each kit includes calming items, fidget items and communication tools such as:
The Northeast Branch features an interactive wall in the children's area which invites children to explore and experiment at their own pace through sight, touch and hearing. It provides a safe place for young people to regulate their own sensory input, creating an opportunity for calm or focus while visiting the often-busy children’s area.
The elements of the wall include:
While the elements of the wall are particularly optimized for children who are neurodivergent, these tools support fine motor development, sensory exploration and early self-regulation skills in all young children.
In addition, the Northeast Branch features activity stations that guide children through body movements that have been shown to help with early development and sensory regulation.

The Library Equal Access Program (LEAP) provides services to patrons with disabilities and supports access to our programs and services. We also offer accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
All our branches have Accessibility Toolkits, which contain a variety of assistive devices for blind and low vision patrons. ZoomText screen enlarging software and Jaws screen reading software is available at every branch. Some locations have other Assistive Technology and Equipment. Visit the LEAP Lab at the Central Library for the largest selection of assistive devices.
