Sensory Kits

Contents of a sensory kit.

Sensory kits are available at all 26 library branches and the Central Library’s Children’s Center for in-library use only. These kits were created to make the library more welcoming and accessible to all patrons. Sensory kits are for everyone, regardless of age or medical diagnosis.

We recognize that the bright lights, noise, and busyness of library spaces can sometimes be overwhelming or uncomfortable, especially for younger visitors. Our kits have a variety of tools to help patrons experiencing overstimulation stay at the library and feel better supported.

Ask staff for a kit during your visit. Each kit includes calming items, fidget items and communication tools such as:

  • Noise-reducing earmuffs, sunglasses and other sensory-minimalization tools that help patrons have more control over the level of light and noise in the library
  • Fidget items that can act as an outlet for anxiety and provide positive tactile stimulation
  • LCD tablets that aid creativity and non-verbal communication
  • Visual timers and moving art that help patrons focus and transition from one activity to another

Sensory Walls

Child interacting with sensory wall

The Northeast Branch features an interactive wall in the children's area which invites children to explore and experiment at their own pace through sight, touch and hearing. It provides a safe place for young people to regulate their own sensory input, creating an opportunity for calm or focus while visiting the often-busy children’s area.

The elements of the wall include:

  • Auditory elements that provide sound-based interaction and exploration
  • Tactile elements featuring various textures, surfaces and materials
  • Visual elements that patrons can observe and interact with

While the elements of the wall are particularly optimized for children who are neurodivergent, these tools support fine motor development, sensory exploration and early self-regulation skills in all young children.

In addition, the Northeast Branch features activity stations that guide children through body movements that have been shown to help with early development and sensory regulation.
